Welcome!

Fri Jan 9, 2009, 9:25 AM
This is a club for those looking for recipes and tips for eating on a tight budget, as well as those who wish to share their own. Cooking in itself can be an art form, and the ingenuity needed to live on a little can be full of surprising amounts of creativity. I hope this group will be a helpful resource for those who are struggling to make ends meet. Please note, this is NOT a group for showcasing talent in cooking. Fancy cakes and decorated platters need not apply...unless they can be made cheaply!

Recipe and Tip Folders:

The group is broken down into folders. A brief summary of each folder is as follows:

Recipe Folders
$ 0-5 Recipes: This grouping is for recipes that can be made for five dollars or less (per person).
There are four different categories: Meat, Vegetarian, Side Dish, and Dessert

$ 5-10 Recipes: This grouping is for recipes that take anywhere between five and ten dollars to make (recipes that will feed at least two people are preferred).
There are four different categories: Meat, Vegetarian, Side Dish, and Dessert

$ 10-20 Recipes: This folder is for recipes that take anywhere between ten and twenty dollars to make. Recipes that will feed multiple people, or last for several meals, are required.
There are four different categories: Meat, Vegetarian, Side Dish, and Dessert

Tips/Articles/Advice Folders
Tips on How to Save: This folder is for tips on how to save money on grocery shopping, such as buying in bulk, eliminating or going easy on desserts, and using up everything you buy before it spoils.

Tips for Healthy Eating on a Budget: This folder is for advice on staying healthy, such as ensuring that your diet contains enough Vitamin C to prevent scurvy, and what foods to avoid.

How to Eat Free-Range on a Budget: This folder is for tips on how to be able to afford things such as cage-free eggs or free-range beef. This section is NOT for articles or opinions about whether or not to eat free-range. However, people can discuss the pros and cons of buying free-range in the comment section of articles. Please be civil.

How to Eat Vegetarian on a Budget: This folder is for tips on how to eat a completely vegetarian diet on a budget. This section is NOT for articles or opinions about whether or not to become a vegetarian. However, people can discuss the pros and cons of vegetarianism in the comment section of articles. Behave.

How to Eat Vegan on a Budget: This folder is for tips on how to eat a completely vegan diet on a budget. This section is NOT for articles or opinions about whether or not to become a vegan. However, people can discuss the pros and cons of veganism in the comment section of articles. Be nice.

How to submit Recipes:

-Please be sure to read the folder descriptions listed above. They will indicate group specifics, such as making sure recipes submitted in the 10 to 20 dollar range feed multiple people or make several meals.

-Recipes can be text only, photo tutorial, or any other format. If submitting a video, please upload the video to a video hosting site such as Youtube, and submit the URL.

-Recipes should include a basic price estimate for each ingredient. The ingredient prices should be added together, and the total should not exceed the category prices (0-5, 5-10, and 10-20 dollars). Staples such as milk, eggs, salt, and pepper do not need to be priced unless a recipe calls for an unusually large amount of an item. A full list of pantry staples can be found here: [link]

-Once again, the goal of this group is to share cheap recipes, and NOT to showcase personal cooking talents. For example, things like beautifully decorated cakes, while lovely, do not belong on here. That said, if you can make a cake cheaply, feel free to submit a "How to Decorate" article, especially if you can help a person save money by showing them how to make their own wedding cake, etc.

-Recipes may be submitted by emailing a text or picture file to the following address: stonesouped@yahoo.com
Within your email, please include:
-A URL to your Deviantart gallery, and whether or not you wish to be credited for the recipe (if you do, a link to your gallery will be put in the recipe description). Your real name can also be credited if desired.
-A text or picture file containing your recipe. If submitting a video, please upload it to a video hosting site, and include the URL in your email. Please also include a preview image.
-A deviantart description if you have anything to add that is not included in your recipe file.
-An email subject that has the recipe category listed (ie. $ 0-5 Recipes - Meat). You can determine the appropriate category by adding together your ingredient price estimates, which will give you a total cost.

How to submit Tips and Articles:

-Please be sure to read the folder descriptions listed above. Folders such as "How to eat Free-Range on a budget" have some basic rules.

-Email your tips or article to: stonesouped@yahoo.com

-Within your email subject, please include the name of the folder you are submitting your tips or article to.

-Please include a link to your deviantart gallery within your email, and specify whether or not you wish to be credited for your submission. You may also include your real name, if you wish to have that credited as well. Do not submit someone else's (ie. an article from a health magazine) work as your own. Linking to articles by other people is fine however.

Questions and Suggestions

IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE US

For consistency's sake, please make sure your ingredient prices are in US dollars. If you need to convert to US dollars to submit a recipe, or wish to convert a recipe's price estimates to your own currency, here is one of many currency converters:

If a recipe uses, say, British measurements and oven temperatures, here are some other helpful conversion websites:
